MDI Resident Archive MDI Observables

mdi.loi_Ic

Description

Computed continuum from either 30-second or 60-second observations in full-disc mode, sampled once per minute at second 00, and summed into each of 180 distinct macropixels defined on the CCD pixels (the “LOI Mask”). The CCD pixel locations for each LOI-Mask macropixel are given in the ancillary data record mdi.macropixmaps_loi[7007]. The data are part of the MDI Structure Program, and are intended to be continuous throughout the mission. All of the data are acquired in linear polarization.

Except during periods of extended loss of contact, there is one record per minute, to assure continuity of certain ancillary data. Records for which there is no image (fill records) have the high-order bit of the QUALITY keyvalue set, and have DATAVALS = 0. Approximately 1% of the records are fill.

Coverage / Duty Cycle

The fraction of possible time intervals containing partial or complete images during each mission phase is as follows:

(Record count only)
1996.04.20 – 1996.05.22 1996.05.23 – 1998.06.24 1998.10.20 – 1998.12.21 1999.02.03 – 2010.09.14 2010.09.14 – 2011.04.12 >2011.04.12

Complete 00 .991* .903* .974* .899*0

Superseded records: 17280 in addition to 7496640 valid.

Data Storage

The data for all records in a day are stored in a single 2-dimensional FITS files (named data.tas, for Tiled Array Storage), where the 1st axis has a length of 180 and corresponds to the macropixel number, and the 2nd axis has a length of 1440 and corresponds to the minute of the day (the T_REC slot). Special Notes

All data for the following 104 days were lost, probably due to the failure of a disc containing data yet to be archived to tape; they must be reingested from the DSDS source series:
