1. THEORY OF OPERATIONS 1.1 INTRODUCTION 1.2 REFERENCE MATERIAL These references are in a folder in the EOF: MDI Guide: The Use and Operation of the MDI Instrument (Instrument Operations) SOI-MDI Paper (Scherrer) in the SOHO Mission Book (Describes MDI instrument, goals and operations) SOI-MDI News (Newsletter) SOI-MDI Mission Operations Plan (Operations Plan of MDI for EOF) These references are in separate binders in the EOF: SOI-MDI Experiment Operations Manual (MDI procedures and operations, all info that the FOT needs to know) ICD Binder in EOF (Communications between EOF and ECS) SOHO Ops Plan (EOF procedures) Flight Ops Plan (FOT operations and procedures) IP Info Folder (What IP does, error & instruction codes) Interface and Ops Docs (IP, software, ICD's) These references are on the Stanford Operations Page: (http://soi.stanford.edu/operations/operations.html) SOI Science Planning Procedures Mission Operations Plan Experiment Operations Manual Operations Guide Calibration and Analysis Software GSE Software System 1.3 PROGRAMS FOR MDI 1.3.1 Program List monitor is a program for the operating system and housekeeping sequencer is main program and it has 3 submodes alt is a 30 sec mode campaign is a 30 sec mode prime60 is a 60 sec mode with 2 parts structure is the low rate full disk images (2/min) dynamics is the low rate full disk images (1/min) PLUS high rate other observations-alt or campaign (1/min) 1.3.2 Program Descriptions Structure Program: The scientific objectives related to determining the solar internal STRUCTURE require continuous or nearly continuous observations for many months to years, so this data must be transmitted in the low bandwidth channel. Dynamics Program: The detailed study of the solar convection zone DYNAMICS requires all observable modes for a long interval. During high-bandwidth telemetry intervals exceeding 72 hours, MDI transmits full disk Dopplergrams each minute for the primary dynamics program. 1.4 TYPES OF COMMANDS - NRT (near real time) - BKG (background) - Delayed - TSTOL 1.5 TYPES OF IMAGES - Velocity (dopplergrams) - Line Intensity - Continuum Intensity - Magnetic Field (magnetograms) 1.6 TELEMETRY MODES - VC0 - low rate housekeeping - VC1 - low rate science - VC2 - high rate magnetorgams (data comes here) - VC3 - high rate helioseismology (data goes to JPL) - VC4 - high rate data dump 1.7 TREE OF OPERATIONS - Computers: IWS -> ECS -> CMS -> POCC -> DSN -> Spacecraft - People: IWS -> SOC -> FOT
