Magnetic fiends are of fundamental importance in the
physics of the Sun. Small flux tubes, large coronal holes, rapid energetic
flares, and the 11-year solar cycle all depend on the configuration and dynamics
of the field. The MDI instrument on SOHO provides the opportunity for frequent,
high quality, synoptic observations of the full-disk line of sight magnetic
fiend and of vector fields at high resolution free from atmospheric
distortions. These measurements will be interleaved with the primary
helioseismology observation with minimal impact on those programs.
