LASCO C2 images from 29 November and 5 December 1998. The equator and the direction to Ulysses (17 degrees south of the equator) are also shown. At the time of this quadrature, the radial to Ulysses was crossing first through a dark area and, later on, through a bright streamer region. The inner and outer circles show, respectively, the solar disk size and the lower edge of LASCO C2 field of view (at 2 solar radii). UVCS made observations at 3.5 and 4.5 solar radii; as shown in the next plots, the transition from a dark to a bright region heavily affects the plasma status at these coronal altitudes and in the interplanetary medium.
