Title: ============== Spatial Power Spectra of Magnetograms and Coronal Images Lead Investigator: ======= Piet Martens, ESA-SOC Team Members: ================== Daniel Gomez*, University of Buenos Aires * for theoretical analysis Local Coordinator: ================== Not required Lead Programmer: ===== N/A Technical Summary: ================== I propose to Fourier analyze 5 to 10 full-disk magnetograms and nearly simultaneous EIT (all 4 bands) and Yohkoh full-disk images. Proposal Text: ======================= This investigation is a continuation of similar work on ground-based magnetograms and NIXT and Yohkoh data. I will verify the azimuthal symmetry of the 2D spatial power-spectra, and the power-law structure of the azimuthally averaged spectra. A relation between the slopes of the power-laws for magnetograms and coronal X-ray images has been derived previously (ref. 1) and verified, but is not a priori clear how the EIT images fit in with to this relation -- if they conform to our equation that indicates that the loops in EIT images are the result of stationary heating, just like SXT loops, if not this will pose a challenge for further theoretical analysis. In addition, the relationship between the slopes for the magnetograms and coronal images allows one to distinguish between wave heating and joule heating of the corona (ref. 1).
