SOI Proposal Instructions
Proposals for SOI Science Investigations are entertained pursuant to the
guidelines laid out in the
Announcement of Opportunity
and the
SOI Data Policy.
All SOI investigations are carried out by Science Working Groups.
The term "Science Working Group" refers to your proposed investigation team,
even if you are the only member. The progress of each investigation will be
monitored
as it proceeds from
step to step.
We prefer to receive the text of your proposal in ASCII or HTML.
The text of the proposal can be in TeX, provided that the full file
with macro definitions is included. Proposals in PostScript,
RTF, and nroff are also acceptable. Remember that your
proposal will be automatically emailed to the SOI Project Office.
Your abstract will be posted on the WWW shortly after it is received.
Unless you object, the full text of your proposal will be posted
after it has been accepted.
For a brief summary of the capabilities of MDI and the types of data
available, see
MDI-SOI Observations and Observables.
The times at which data from different programs are expected to be
available to investigators are contained in the
Data Plan.
Investigation Title:
A descriptive title of the proposed investigation.
Lead Investigator:
Name (and affiliation) of the proposer, team leader, or organizer.
E-mail:
E-mail address of lead investigator.
Team Members:
Include the names (and affiliations) of all other co-investigators
participating in this proposal, if any.
You may (but need not) also identify potential collaborators whose
participation has not yet been confirmed by placing an asterisk by their
names. It is helpful to list the team members one per line.
Local Coordinator:
The name of an SOI team member at Stanford or Lockheed (or GSFC) who will
take responsibility for providing the data, including the execution of
required observations and data processing. A
local coordinator
is required for SOI Science Investigations. If you don't specify a local
coordinator, one will be assigned by the project with the agreement of the
Working Group.
SSSC Programmer:
The lead technical support person at Stanford or Lockheed. In general,
designation of a lead programmer should only be necessary for Team Science
efforts, and should be left to the SOI Coordinator.
Abstract / Technical Summary:
Short 1-2 paragraph abstract of the investigation stating the scientific
objectives and outlining the data to be analyzed and the type of analysis
The body of the investigation proposal. It should include sufficiently
detailed observation and analysis plans for assessment of its feasibility.
There should be a well-defined scientific objective and a discussion
of the specific approach or approaches to be taken.
Other SOI objectives and MDI Observations involving similar or
identical analysis or observation components should be referenced, and
the multiple use of SOI Data products is encouraged.
The Investigation plan is a one to five page mini-proposal with enough
detail to describe the scope of the planned investigation.
Rather than including a broad range of objectives possible with a
given dataset,
the investigation should be targeted to a science objective. There will
likely be several science objectives that can be supported by many of the
MDI Observation sequences.
