Successful launch of the the Solar Dynamics Observatory,
SDO took place on February 11, 2010. The instrument front door opened in late March.
SDO is currently orbiting here.
You can find launch preparation pictures here.
Our instrument on SDO is the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager,
HMI
,
MDI is the instrument of the Solar Oscillations Investigation on the
Solar and
Heliospheric
Observatory.
The SOHO spacecraft functioned well after launch
in December 1995. Contact with SOHO was lost for several months beginning June 25, 1998.
The recovery
process began immediately. Contact was reestablished in July/August and
by October SOHO was back from its vacation and once again
operational. With the loss of its last remaining gyro,
SOHO
went off line again for several weeks at the end of 1998.
SOHO
has since been reprogrammed and has been working ever since.
Because the antenna pointing no longer functions reliably,
SOHO is now regularly rotated in what is now called
keyhole operations.
Regular operation of the MDI instrument will cease in 2010 because better data is being produced by HMI.
Synoptic maps and movies
provide the most complete available picture of solar
magnetic fields over the whole surface.

Our first (Jan 96) little movie
of the Sun's magnetic field as seen from space was very exciting.
The Hinode spacecraft launched a decade later can do much
better.
